1What is a preposition

A preposition is a small connecting word. It shows the relationship between other words in a sentence. In Italian it usually comes before the word or phrase it introduces.

The familiar Sinhala category නිපාත පද is broader than Italian prepositions. In this lesson, we use that term to introduce Italian preposizioni as a particular type of connecting word.

Vado a Milano.

I go to Milan.

මම මිලානෝ නගරයට යනවා.

Compare Milano + ට in Sinhala with a + Milano in Italian. Sinhala often expresses this meaning with an ending or a word after the noun. Italian puts the preposition before it.

සිංහලෙන් “මිලානෝ නගරයට” කියද්දී “ට” යෙදෙන්නේ නගරයේ නමට පසුවයි. ඉතාලි භාෂාවේ a යෙදෙන්නේ Milano ට පෙරයි. ඒ නිසා සිංහල වචන අනුපිළිවෙළ ඒ ආකාරයෙන්ම ඉතාලි භාෂාවට ගෙන යන්න බැහැ.

Il libro di Nimal.

Nimal’s book.

නිමල්ගේ පොත.

Vado con Nimal.

I go with Nimal.

මම නිමල් එක්ක යනවා.

The nine simple prepositions are di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra, fra. They do not change for masculine, feminine, singular, or plural. However, some join with a definite article: a + il = al; di + la = della; su + il = sul. These joined forms are called preposizioni articolate. Sections 16 to 24 explain how to form and use them.

සරල නිපාත පද නවය වන්නේ di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra, fra.

2The most important idea

Do not learn one Sinhala translation for each preposition. Learn the whole pattern. One Sinhala ending can correspond to several Italian prepositions.

එක් නිපාත පදයකට එකම සිංහල තේරුමක් කටපාඩම් කරන්න එපා. මුළු වාක්‍ය රටාවම ඉගෙන ගන්න. සිංහලෙන් එකම “ට” යෙදුණත් ඉතාලි භාෂාවේ වෙනස් නිපාත පද අවශ්‍ය වෙන්න පුළුවන්.

3DI Belonging and connection

First ask: whose is it? Use di to connect an object to its owner. With a person’s name, the beginner pattern is object + di + name.

මුලින් “මේක කාගේද?” කියලා අහන්න. යමක් අයිති කෙනාව පෙන්වන්න di යොදනවා. කෙනෙකුගේ නම සමඟ භාවිත කරන සරල රටාව වන්නේ “දේ + di + නම” යන්නයි.

4A Cities, recipients and times

Use a with cities, both for being there and for going there. It is the type of place, not whether you are moving, that matters in these examples.

16What are preposizioni articolate

A preposizione articolata is a simple preposition joined to a definite article. The preposition still expresses the relationship. The article agrees with the noun in gender and number, and its form also depends on the opening sound of the following word.

Preposizioni articolate කියන්නේ සරල නිපාත පදයක් සහ නිශ්චිත articolo එකක් එකතු වී සෑදෙන ආකාරයි. නිපාත පදයෙන් වචන අතර සම්බන්ධය පෙන්වනවා. articolo එක තෝරන්නේ නාමයේ ලිංගය, ඒක වචන හෝ බහු වචන බව සහ ඊළඟ වචනය ආරම්භ වන ශබ්දය අනුවයි.

Simple preposition + definite article = articulated preposition

සරල නිපාත පදය + නිශ්චිත articolo එක = එකතු වූ නිපාත පදය

PartsJoined formPhrase

da + ildaldal medico
in + lanellanella borsa
su + ilsulsul tavolo

Vado al mercato.

I go to the market.

මම වෙළඳපොළට යනවා.

Here the destination pattern uses a, and mercato takes il. Therefore a + il becomes al. Al is not a new meaning to memorise separately: it contains both a and il.

මෙහි යන ස්ථානය කියන්න a යොදනවා. mercato සමඟ යෙදෙන articolo එක il. ඒ නිසා a + il එකතු වී al වෙනවා. al කියන්නේ වෙනම අලුත් තේරුමක් ඇති වචනයක් ලෙස කටපාඩම් කළ යුතු දෙයක් නොවෙයි. එය a සහ il දෙකම අඩංගු ආකාරයක්.

17Review the definite articles

Before choosing al, allo, alla, or another joined form, identify the noun’s article. Learn nouns with their articles: il mercato, la scuola, lo studente, l’ufficio.

al, allo, alla වැනි ආකාරයක් තෝරන්න කලින් නාමයට අදාළ articolo එක හඳුනා ගන්න. නාමයක් තනිව ඉගෙන ගන්නවා වෙනුවට එහි articolo එක සමඟ ඉගෙන ගන්න: il mercato, la scuola, lo studente, l’ufficio.

Lo and gli are also used before beginnings such as gn, ps, and certain foreign sounds. This table is a recap, rather than the full article lesson. L’ is singular only: the plural is gli or le according to gender.

lo සහ gli යෙදෙන තවත් ආරම්භක ශබ්ද තිබෙනවා. උදාහරණ ලෙස gn සහ ps දැක්විය හැකියි. මෙය articoli පිළිබඳ සම්පූර්ණ පාඩමක් නොව කෙටි මතක් කිරීමක්. l’ යෙදෙන්නේ ඒක වචන සඳහා පමණයි. බහු වචනයේදී ලිංගය අනුව gli හෝ le යොදනවා.

🧩 Build it yourself

Pick a preposition and an article. The table above highlights the result.

Preposition
Definite article + noun
Choose one from each row.

Notice the changes in di and in: di + il is del, not “dil”; in + il is nel, not “inil”. Before l’, retain the apostrophe and attach the following word: dell’amica, all’ufficio, nell’armadio.

di සහ in එකතු වන විට වෙනස් වන ආකාරය බලන්න: di + il = del; in + il = nel. l’ සමඟ එකතු වූ විට apostrofo ලකුණ තබා ඊළඟ වචනය සමඟ හිස්තැනක් නැතිව ලියන්න: dell’amica, all’ufficio, nell’armadio.

19Choose the preposition, then the article

Use three steps: understand the relationship; identify the correct article if the expression needs one; combine the two. Gender does not choose the preposition. Gender helps choose the article.

20When to keep the simple preposition

Do not add an article just because a noun follows. First learn whether the expression uses an article. Many city names, personal names, and fixed expressions do not use one.

නිපාත පදයට පසුව නාමයක් තිබුණු පමණින් articolo එකක් එකතු කරන්න එපා. මුලින් එම යෙදුමට articolo එකක් අවශ්‍යද බලන්න. බොහෝ නගර නම්, පුද්ගල නම් සහ ස්ථිර යෙදුම්වල articolo එකක් යෙදෙන්නේ නැහැ.

Simple expressionExpression with an articleWhy

These are examples, not a universal rule that every “general” place has no article and every “specific” place has one. Place expressions depend on established usage too.

මේවා උදාහරණ පමණයි. “සාමාන්‍ය ස්ථානයකට articolo නැහැ; නිශ්චිත ස්ථානයකට හැමවිටම articolo තිබෙනවා” කියලා සෑම අවස්ථාවකටම අදාළ නීතියක් හදා ගන්න එපා. ස්ථාන යෙදුම්වල භාෂාවේ පිළිගත් භාවිතයත් වැදගත්.

With an indefinite article, keep the words separate: da un medico; in una borsa; di un amico. Un, uno, una, and un’ do not form this combination table.

Vado da un medico.

I go to a doctor’s.

මම එක් වෛද්‍යවරයෙකු හමුවෙන්න යනවා.

21CON, PER, TRA and FRA with articles

In ordinary modern Italian, per, tra, and fra remain separate from the article: per il bambino, tra le case, fra gli amici. Con can also remain separate: con il treno, con la carta, con gli amici.

සාමාන්‍ය නූතන ඉතාලි භාෂාවේ per, tra, fra යන නිපාත පද articolo එකෙන් වෙන්ව ලියනවා: per il bambino, tra le case, fra gli amici. con සමඟත් වචන වෙන්ව ලිවිය හැකියි: con il treno, con la carta, con gli amici.

You will also see col = con il and coi = con i. Both are used, but con il and con i are correct too. Older joined forms such as collo and colla are not necessary for this beginner lesson.

col = con il සහ coi = con i යන ආකාරත් භාවිත වෙනවා. නමුත් con il සහ con i ලෙස වෙන්ව ලිවීමත් නිවැරදියි. මුලින් con සමඟ වචන වෙන්ව භාවිත කිරීම ඉගෙන ගන්න. collo සහ colla වැනි පැරණි එකතු වූ ආකාර මේ ආරම්භක පාඩමට අවශ්‍ය නැහැ.

Esco con gli amici.

I go out with the friends.

මම යහළුවන් එක්ක එළියට යනවා.

Questo regalo è per il bambino.

This gift is for the child.

මේ තෑග්ග දරුවා වෙනුවෙන්.

La farmacia è tra la banca e la scuola.

The pharmacy is between the bank and the school.

ෆාමසිය බැංකුව සහ පාසල අතර තියෙනවා.

22Useful time forms and a partitive reminder

For clock times, a joins with the article: a + le otto = alle otto; a + l’una = all’una. For a time range, learn dalle otto alle dieci.

Lavoro dalle otto alle dieci.

I work from eight to ten.

මම අටේ සිට දහය දක්වා වැඩ කරනවා.

මෙහි dalle = da + le සහ alle = a + le. ආරම්භ වන වේලාවත් අවසන් වන වේලාවත් පෙන්වනවා. එකට කියන්නේ all’una; අනෙකුත් සාමාන්‍ය පැය සඳහා alle යෙදෙනවා.

The same written forms del, della, dei, degli, and delle can also function as partitive articles. Read the whole sentence to understand their job.

del, della, dei, degli, delle වැනි එකම ලිඛිත ආකාර articoli partitivi ලෙසත් භාවිත වෙනවා. එම වචනයෙන් කරන කාර්යය තේරුම් ගන්න සම්පූර්ණ වාක්‍යය බලන්න.

La borsa della maestra è nuova.

The teacher’s bag is new.

ගුරුතුමියගේ බෑගය අලුත් එකක්.

Here della connects the bag to its owner: di + la maestra.

Compro della frutta.

I buy some fruit.

මම පලතුරු ටිකක් මිලදී ගන්නවා.

Here della expresses an unspecified quantity of fruit. It functions as a partitive article. It does not mean that the fruit belongs to someone.

පළමු වාක්‍යයේ della යන්නෙන් බෑගය අයිති කාටද කියලා පෙන්වනවා. දෙවන වාක්‍යයේ della යන්නෙන් නිශ්චිතව නොකියූ පලතුරු ප්‍රමාණයක් පෙන්වනවා. එහි අර්ථය “පලතුරු ටිකක්” යන්නයි.

25How to study this lesson

First practise a, in, da, and con with places and people. Then add di, su, and per. Finally practise time expressions and tra or fra. A teacher can spread this material across several lessons instead of testing every meaning at once.

මුලින් ස්ථාන සහ පුද්ගලයන් සමඟ a, in, da, con පුහුණු කරන්න. ඉන්පසු di, su, per එකතු කරන්න. අවසානයේ කාල ප්‍රකාශ සහ tra හෝ fra පුහුණු කරන්න. සියලුම භාවිත එකවර කටපාඩම් කරන්න උත්සාහ නොකරන්න.

Keep a phrase notebook: a casa; a Milano; in Italia; in farmacia; in autobus; a piedi; da Nimal; dal medico; con la carta; sul tavolo; per lavorare. Add an example from your own life next to each phrase.

වචන පමණක් ලියනවා වෙනුවට සම්පූර්ණ යෙදුම් ලියන සටහන් පොතක් තබා ගන්න. එක් එක් යෙදුමට ඔබගේ ජීවිතයට අදාළ වාක්‍යයක් එකතු කරන්න.

After the simple patterns feel familiar, review articles and practise the five combination rows. Build short phrases first, then complete sentences. Do not assess every use and every combination in one beginner test.

සරල වාක්‍ය රටා හුරු වූ පසු articoli නැවත මතක් කර වගුවේ පේළි පහ පුහුණු කරන්න. මුලින් කෙටි යෙදුම් සාදන්න. ඉන්පසු සම්පූර්ණ වාක්‍ය සාදන්න. ආරම්භක සිසුන්ට සියලු භාවිත සහ සියලු එකතු වූ ආකාර එකම පරීක්ෂණයකින් පරීක්ෂා කරන්න එපා.
